Town Newsletter – Feb 2018
Port au Choix Council would like to wish a Happy & Healthy New Year to all its residents.
Some of the things that have been happening in our town in the past few months:
Municipal Affairs has approved our annual 2018 Budget. We are happy to announce that there is no increase in taxes this year. In addition we are adding a new Early Bird Discount of 10% to any resident who pay their municipal taxes in full, before March 31, 2018. This is a pilot project and will be reviewed in the upcoming year to see if it is feasible to offer this again in the future. This discount is in addition to the 20% discount already applied to senior’s accounts.
Any property owner 65 years of age and older is entitled to a 20% discount on their property tax only upon receipt of proof of age. It is up to the senior to make sure that the clerk receives proof within the year that they turn 65. There is no recto-active discount.
Proposed New Subdivision:
Council has included plans to develop a new senior’s complex within the plans to develop a new proposed subdivision situated in the area behind the trailer court.
New Water Storage Tank:
The new water storage tank is still on hold. Council is working with the government to have a new tank put in place.
Important Note: With the power outage last week we ran out of water in some areas of town. This was due to residents running their water to avoid it freezing up. It is important to note that we cannot pump water into the water tank without power and the tank ran dry in 18 hours. There was enough water in the tank for nearly two day at normal consumptions. Please do not run your water in a power outage, conserve where possible.
Come Home Year Committee:
The come home year committee is having a Valentine Dance at the United Towns Lions Club on February 10, 2018 @ 8:30 pm Tickets are $15.00.
You can purchase tickets in advance from Kim 861-8179 or Jody 861-7464.
Come enjoy a night out and support the come year home committee in the process.
Boat Lighting Ceremony:
The boat lighting ceremony was an amazing success. A committee will be put in place to make bigger and better plans for next year.
The Port au Choix Fire Department will be hosting their Annual Poker Run on Saturday February 24th, 2018. Come out and support your local fire department.
Twin Town Sports Complex:
The Stadium will be hosting their annual event, The “Fun Run” on Saturday, February 10th, 2018. Come out and support the stadium and have some fun.
Residents are reminded to put their civic address #’s on the front of their houses. Port au Choix, as well as all the province is now under the 911 emergency number. Having your number on your house will make it easier to find in an emergency.
Water Dispensing Unit:
We ask that residents please take special care to make sure that the door is completely shut after using the building. The door was damaged in the wind at one time and does not completely close through without being pushed. Making sure the door is closed will not only save on the hydro bill but also prevent snow drifting in and possible freezing of the pipes.
-No sea cans on residential properties unless
- Permit from the town
- Windows & doors are installed
- Painted or siding is installed
A new regulation for Commercial Sea Cans/Reefers will be developed in the Spring. Council is in the process of looking for a suitable designated area.
